To be able to boot Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.10 in my new Lenovo L5210 with Intel Sandy Bridge I need to set
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text in grub options. Otherwise I only get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner.
When I set
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text, instead of the cursor I now get a
error: no video mode activated message in the upper left corner.
So what exactly does
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text do, and what do I lose by setting it?
